Welcome to the world of the Resistance, a world where a privileged few live a comfortable, high-class life with all the modern comforts they could want, and the lower class works and slaves to provide those comforts, knowing that for themselves the best they can hope for is an adequate meal on the table and a warm place to sleep. Yet citizens of both classes know that their lives may end at any moment if they are even suspected of being one of the hated Christians, or of any other religious group. The Resistance was created to protect those who practiced their beliefs in secrecy, and to try to fight the dictatorship and its laws, both openly and in secret. Their ultimate goal is to make the world safe for the faithful once more, so that they must no longer choose between giving up their most cherished beliefs or giving up their very lives. Our story begins with Keyri. Little about Keyri is known; no one knows where she comes from, what her story is, or how she came to be alone on the streets. For that matter, few see Keyri herself often enough to recognize her well; she tends to move from town to town quite often, never staying in one place long enough to become a familiar face. When Keyri entered the town of Windale, she searched the suburban residential areas for food and shelter. The abandoned and often destroyed houses offered little, but she found what she could. It was there that she ran into Kathryn and Jace, who were searching for an important item in the house where Keyri had taken shelter for the night. After some harrowing adventures, Kathryn and Jace offered Keyri a place to stay in the Windale Resistance Headquarters. Keyri accepted, but the two could tell that there was something seriously wrong with this girl, some deep pain that lurked inside her eyes. They suspected some of the truth—that deep inside, a part of Keyri wanted to die, hated herself and wanted to kill herself. They promised each other they would do what they could to heal that pain, but they never realized just how deep it ran. Keyri was about to become entwined in the complicated plans of the Resistance, but would she help and aid them in their cause—or would she destroy herself, and possibly her newfound friends along with her?
