Calandryll, or Calan to his friends, is Rivendell's captain of the guard. He is an extremely chivalrous knight from a country called Saerlia, from which he gets a slight Australian accent. He depends mostly on his skill with a blade; he trusts swordsmanship over magic and the supernatural. (One of his most common statements early on when he entered Rivendell was, "Am I the only one here who doesn't use magic??" *S*) Now, however, he is learning to be more comfortable with the use of magic, since he is now the bearer of the magical Dreamblade.
Calan has a complicated past; his former best friend, Ramiel, is now his worst enemy and is one of the generals attacking Rivendell and the Dreamworld. Calan himself plays a major role in the Dreamworld Saga, partly because of his associations with Ramiel, both of friendship and enmity, but also because he is in love with Ariana. Calan dreamed of Ariana for fifteen years before he actually met her, and he fell in love with her long before they ever ran into each other in Rivendell. But that love was apparently destined to be, and Calan will forsake almost any vow or responsibility in order to protect Ariana.
Calan isn't so hard to fall in love with himself! Together he and Ariana make a quite a pair, certainly a difficult team to overcome. The Lord of Nightmares has found that his best strategy is to separate them and strain their love for each other as best he can. So far he has not succeeded. An innocent, hopeless romantic, and a chivalrous knight and soldier, together Ariana and Calan may yet find a way to save their two worlds, their friends, and their joy and happiness in each other.
