World and Culture

The world of Alundra is actually not very big, at least that part of it that appears in the game. There is only one village, and it's very small. Alundra does explore quite a range of areas surrounding the village, but geographically we know little about the kingdom.

AlundraRPG will take place in an entirely different part of the world from Inoa, in a distant land to the east. Across the eastern reaches of Inoa's kingdom, and across the sea beyond it, lies another continent, the northern part of which is divided into three main kingdoms. You can find an extremely detailed map below, but be warned before clicking the link—it's 497K in size, in order for all the names and features to be readable.

Silverland

Our story begins in Silverland, a beautiful kingdom of cool forests, high-reaching mountain peaks, and fertile plains. The weather is mild, with plenty of both rain and sun. The kingdom is bordered by the Dawntoucher Peaks to the north and east, the Tiendel Forest to the east, the Nerry River to the south, and the Devil's Cliffs to the west. Below you will find a list of the major places and features of this kingdom.

Silverland's capital city is Glindrelle, which sits at the junction of three major rivers. These rivers divide the kingdom roughly into three parts, like the spokes of a wheel. On the eastern side, this portion of the kingdom is divided further into north and south, separating the Rannel Valley and the Lake Country. Thus there are four major regions of Silverland: north, west, east, and southeast.

Cerredy

The kingdom of Cerredy borders Silverland to the south. This kingdom is on fairly friendly terms with their northern allies, and Cerredy serves as a major trading center between the three kingdoms, as the Devil's Cliffs make direct trade between the other two kingdoms all but impossible. Cerredy is a relaxed, friendly society, rather balmier than its northern neighbor. It is bordered on the west by the Cerredrelle River and the Devil's Cliffs, by the Nerry River to the north, and by the Eastern Jungles to the south and east. Rather smaller than the other kingdoms, it nevertheless has a few points of specific interest.

Lor'ash

The kingdom of Lor'ash is a very different place from its neighbors. Consisting primarily of deserts stretching from its northern hills to its southern borders, it is a harsh, dry land. Most of its population is concentrated on the Rannisk River's floodplain, where it is fertile enough to grow crops. Nomads wander the deserts to the north and south. The people are reserved and traditional, with a much different outlook on life than those from kingdoms with kinder climates. Lor'ash is bordered by the Rakhtal Hills and the Dawntoucher Peaks to the north, by the Southern Desert to the south, the Western Ocean to the west, and the Devil's Cliffs to the east.

Current Events

For many years, the three kingdoms have been at peace, if in varying stages of friendship and alliance. About a generation back, Cerredy was attacked and overrun by the Murgg of the Eastern Jungles. When Lor'ash offered to help, Cerredy gladly accepted an alliance with them. Lor'ash warriors moved in and helped beat back the Murgg threat. Some warriors went home, but many stayed on in military bases outside Cerredy's capital of Cerdenar, with a few in Fort Dacket, north of the Daggerpoint Mountains.

Since then, Lor'ash's influence in Cerredy's politics has increased. The two nations have become closely allied, with Lor'ash having more and more weight in important national decisions. King Esnen of Cerredy relies heavily on Lor'ash advisors and bows to their wishes in many things.

Very recently and without any apparent warning, the Lor'ash soldiers in Cerredy assembled and began moving northward. Many units are already camped at the northern base of the Daggerpoint Mountains, although they have yet to move through the swamps. Rynothan, the Kisreth of Lor'ash, is leading them and has sent a polite message with many veiled threats to Queen Rain. He asks for a new trade agreement and alliance, but based on his terms, it is apparent that what he is really asking for is Lor'ash occupation of Silverland. His troops are poised to move across the Nedris Swamp and the Nerry River and invade Silverland if his terms are denied. Determined not to bow to any foreign warlord and undermine her kingdom's independence, Queen Rain sent a defiant rejection of his terms. She has traveled south to Vernath to oversee the hurried assembling of Silverland's troops. Although Lor'ash's forces are strong, Silverland seemed to have a good chance of beating the invaders back. Many people of Silverland are extremely patriotic, and in addition to the standing army that poured in from the military forts scattered throughout the southern lands, volunteers have begun to show up. Things looked hopeful, until a week ago.

Rynothan has not moved forward yet, though he has sent a couple more messages, less polite than the first. Queen Rain was optimistic about her troops and continued to be defiant, but then the people of southern Silverland began to fall prey to a strange affliction. At first it was only in the deep southern lands, but it has begun to spread. It is not as strong in the north, but still, the affliction has permeated all corners of the kingdom, striking down at least a small handful of citizens even in the northernmost villages. Not just soldiers, but people of all walks of life have been struck — nobles, merchants, craftsmen, farmers, common laborers, peasants, beggars, bards, and hunters; men, women and children. The affliction seems to strike at random, and while many are untouched still, it is spreading.

The nature of the affliction seems to be rooted in dreams. Those who have fallen prey to the strange illness suffer from strong, disturbing nightmares that rob them of their rest. They have begun to feel tired and drained, and after the first three days, a definite pall of discouragement and gloom hung over the Silverland troops. After three more days, a handful of warriors and citizens began to display variations of the strange disease. Strange things happen when people fall asleep; supplies go rotten overnight, equipment breaks, people wake up screaming and in the throes of madness from which they cannot be brought back. Most disturbing, craftsmen of all types have found themselves unable to practice their crafts. It is as if they take the tools of their trade in their hands and have forgotten how to use them. Bards who sing encouragement to nearby citizens and units of soldiers find themselves forgetting the words or suddenly not having the heart to sing, as they are weighed down with despair. Some people have begun to act almost inhuman, displaying cruelty and unpredictability. Panic rises as the affliction spreads in new and terrifying ways, and no one seems to know where it will stop.

Queen Rain's court bard approached her with stories of a kingdom across the Western Ocean that suffered from a similar problem about ten years back. He could tell her little, but he knew that a strange being had caused the people of the kingdom to suffer from nightmares of various deadly kinds, that spread despair, madness, and death. He could tell her little of the details, but he did know of a balad that spoke of it, and how the plague of nightmares was eventually stopped by a young man of the Clan of Elna, a lost tribe of elves that once roamed the land. With no other idea what to do, Queen Rain began to call for volunteers capable of taking on a new mission. They will leave Silverland in search of an Elna, any Elna, who may be able to help them, for if they do not, there is no way that Silverland can stand against this invading army. Indeed, there many not be anything left of Silverland's citizens if the madness continues to spread at this rate...
